Recently, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Internet Complaint Center (IC3) released its annual report on internet crime. In 2018 alone, a total of 351,936 complaints of internet crime were submitted. The claims stockpiled losses exceeding $2.7 billion.

Of those crimes committed, 11,300 victims were from real estate scams. This caused $150 million in losses (Inman News). From year to year, the number of victims has increased by 17 percent. There were 9,645 real estate fraud victims in 2017. Now the biggest scare of all this is the money lost. The lost of dollars increased by 168 percent from 2017, which saw $56 million get stolen.

As of recent, we have published a few informative blogs on Cybersecurity in the hope that this doesn't happen to you or anyone you know. Be sure to remember the following advice, as it pertains to your security during the closing process:

"Keep your email accounts safe, using strong passwords that include 12 characters or more. Utilize all of the following when creating a password: Uppercase & lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters (!@#$). Do NOT use your email on public devices. Refrain from telling the world about your closing... Last, but not least, when you meet with your closing agent, keep the phone number you receive directly from them handy, and use it to verify any closing instructions or bank account numbers that you have been sent over email or text."

Another tip to keep close to mind while closing on a home is to report any unfamiliar number that reaches out to you about your closing needs. Scammers will do whatever they can to get your hard earned money, so always be aware of what is going on while you're in the closing process.

The most common crimes in the report were electronic purchases, personal data breaches, and extortion. The most costly of these crimes were from investment scams, business email compromises, and confidence fraud.

The FBI has put together a team that works hard to attempt to recover your money, should you fall victim to these criminals. The group is called Recovery Asset Team (RAT), and they were successful in retrieving 75 percent of the aforementioned losses.
